Match Notes By El Cordobes

Que partidazo!!! Although we did not create many scoring situations and we did not control much of the game, I believe that yesterday we played the best game of the season given the circumstances and problems that appeared before and during the game. Before beginning the game we had a lot of questions. Which player would fill in for Scott (the goalie that was always there)? The most experienced alternative (Steve) was not available (an important trip kept him away this week). Luckily we have an excellent team with an established group of players (and nationalities) and Javier offered to play goalie. Also, the defense was without the two outside backs that that had been doing most of the fighting for the team (Sebastian and Sergio) -- but luckily Toby and Pancho returned. The powerful forwards (Charly, Cosimo, Joaocarlos and Fernando) did not come and so we had to put a midfielder in the attack. Then, 10 minutes into the game Raul (one of the best defenders) received 2 yellow cards and the red and so we were down to 10 men and we still had 90% of the game to play. Matt was playing an excellent midfield and we moved him to help out in the defense as well -- so then we were playing with 3 midfielders and 2 forwards. We were able to contain them almost all of the first half until a penalty came. Now we were facing having to win a game being down a goal and with only 10 men. Luckily Javier played the penalty perfectly and the ball went past the post. Then we started thinking that the game could still be ours. The second half started without a sharp advantage to either team, and we continued attacking them. Then came an incredible shot on the post from Alex that bounced in the box and was touched for a handball and a penalty for us. Gustavo hit a perfect shot and we were up with 20 minutes to go, but we all had to stay tough as a team (at least 20 minutes to go in the game). We maintained the result with a tough fight, it we made it tough for them to make good plays. This game was full of so many difficulties (before and during the game). All the players had to play perfectly. Each pass was important because if a ball is lost it becomes 10 v 8 advantage for them -- but we have a lot of players who can adapt to the problems and they put everything they had into the game. There are no stars on the team -- we all push hard. This is a luxury which we have established. Single there is a game next week, I hope that everyone will come out to play. With everybody’s participation we will fight to the end. MVP: Javier, did not make any mistakes in goal, covered some difficult balls and gave the defenders a great sense of security. HM: Between Toby, Ben and Gustavo. I’ll give it to Gustavo by a hair for his goal. LVP: Those that did not come to the game. Everybody get ready!
